CEO comments

The order intake declined during the first six months compared to last year. One reason is the lack of orders within the volatile pattern generator (PG) system sales area. Another reason is a slowdown in the second quarter within surface mount (SMT), mainly due to regional fluctuations.

During the first six months SMT sales has developed well and increased 10 percent compared to last year. The operating margin was 13 percent. Demand has been particularly strong for the equipment in the MY100e series, which was successfully launched in 2011.

During the first half of 2012, sales in the PG business area increased 44 percent compared to the previous year. Results are greatly influenced by system sales and also by the type of system sold. During the second quarter, Micronic Mydata delivered an FPS mask writer.

The Group's aftermarket continues to grow both in terms of volume and profitability, providing a strong foundation for continued growth and profitability. A high degree of utilization on systems at customer sites provides good opportunities for development of aftermarket offerings.

Profitability within aftermarket and SMT equipment is good and we are thus less dependent on deliveries of individual mask writers, sales of which are more volatile.

Several new electronics products have been launched where high resolution displays and AMOLED technology are an important part. This creates demand for displays with increasingly higher image quality and for semiconductor components with more functionality, which in turn drives demand for cost effective production solutions with high writing precision, such as those offered by Micronic Mydata.

Our investment in new product areas, primarily LDI, continues. A technology shift is underway, driven by increasing demands on functionality in combination with cost efficiency.  Our LDI technology contributes to the continued development of new electronics products. Our partners are in the midst of a selection process, i.e. choice of technology and supplier. The project is now primarily focused on achieving high performance in the production processes.

We are pleased that the LDI 5s won the JPCA Show Award in June for its groundbreaking solutions for current and future manufacturing of advanced electronic packaging.
