Since the pandemic, the social media video sharing platform, TikTok, has become a first stop for those looking for handy DIY home hacks and interior trends. The latest of those trends is known as #BookTok – a trend of collecting books and displaying them in aesthetically pleasing interior book displays.

Since the start of the trend, the #BookTok tag has accumulated over 95 billion views and has resulted in the start of a whole new generation of influencers. Book lovers are using the tag to share their love of literature with the billions of users on the social media platform.

Interior designer, Ryan McDonough at myjobquote.co.uk has taken a closer look at the trend and how it’s shaping home book displays.

How #BookTok Is Influencing Home Book Displays

There is no doubt that the #BookTok trend has increased young people’s interest in reading and collecting literary pieces. With this, we have seen a rise in home book displays, something that went out of fashion a long time ago.

However, it looks like home book displays are coming back into fashion, and the younger generation is coming up with a range of ways to display books in new and unique ways.

Displaying Books With Sprayed Edges

One of the newest trends that have come out of the #BookTok world is sprayed edges on books. This is where the edges of the pages are coloured.

Sprayed edges are encouraging people to display their books either spin-in or spine-out, allowing book collectors to find new ways to uniquely display their books according to colour coordination.

Collecting Books According to a Colour Scheme

Although many users taking on the #BookTok trend are genuinely interested in collecting books to read, others are taking on the trend purely for the interior design element.

With this in mind, there is a rise in people buying books purely for the way they look. With colour coordination being a big part of the #BookTok trend, many users are simply buying books based on their colours with the intention of displaying them in sections on their book displays with other books of similar colours.

Coffee Table Book Displays

Coffee table book displays are also increasing in popularity. This involves buying a range of interesting and unique books to display on your coffee table. Similar to the kind of books that you’ll usually find in a swanky hotel, these books generally tend to be non-fiction books, often displaying literary comments on art, architecture or fashion.

These are the kind of books that someone could simply pick up and give a quick read of a few pages while waiting for the coffee to brew. Most of the time, these books are for display purposes only. However, it’s a great idea for those wanting to add a bit of interest and culture to their living room.

Miniature Book Nooks

Miniature book nooks are increasing in popularity. This is the perfect choice for those who don't want to have a giant book display or overpowering bookshelves in their home.

A small book nook can be built into alcoves or spare spaces in the room. This is a great idea for making use of empty space and allows you to make a start on collecting books – perfect for those new to the #BookTok trend.

Matching Books to Interior Design Elements

Similar to the idea of buying books based on their colours, many #BookTok enthusiasts are purchasing books that tie in well with the overall design of their homes.

For example, those with a gothic-style interior may choose darker books that fit in well with the other interior design elements in the home. Similarly, those with a bohemian-style interior may choose lighter books or nature-inspired books accompanied by live plants to help the book display fit in well with their existing interior design elements.
