Cleaning expert, Sarah Dempsey at MyJobQuote.co.uk explains that the best method to clean and descale your showerhead is with vinegar. Below, Sarah explains the best methods for cleaning and descaling a fixed showerhead and a handheld showerhead.

How to Clean and Descale a Handheld Shower Head With Vinegar

  1. Remove the shower head from the attached hose. Put the small rubber washer to the side as you do this so you don’t lose it. It’s important not to lose this as this is what stops the water from leaking out at the point where the hose meets he shower head.
  2. Place the shower head in a bucket or large plastic container and cover it in white vinegar.
  3. Leave the shower head to soak in the vinegar for a minimum of 30 minutes. Try to aim to leave it for around an hour, if possible. However, if your shower head is made from brass, you shouldn’t leave this in the vinegar for any longer than 30 minutes.
  4. After the soaking time is up, remove the shower head and rinse it with water.
  5. Then, use an old toothbrush to remove any remaining limescale. Pay particular attention to the nozzle.
  6. Rinse the shower head again with water.
  7. Polish over the shower head with a clean, dry microfibre cloth.
  8. Reattach the hose to the shower head and then turn the shower on. This will flush out any remaining limescale and leave your shower head looking sparkling clean.

How to Clean and Descale a Fixed Shower Head With Vinegar

If your shower head is fixed to the wall, don’t despair! There is still a way to properly descale it. Take the steps below to properly clean and descale your fixed shower head:

  1. Find a plastic bag that is big enough to fit around your showerhead. Half fill this bag with white vinegar.
  2. Place the half-filled bag over your shower head until it is completely submerged in the vinegar. Then, use elastic bands or string to keep the bag in place.
  3. Leave the shower head to soak in the bag for a minimum of 30 minutes. Try to aim to leave it for around an hour, if possible. However, if your shower head is made from brass, you shouldn’t leave this in the vinegar for any longer than 30 minutes.
  4. After the soak time is up, remove the bag from the shower head.
  5. Turn your shower on to flush out any limescale deposits that may be left inside the shower head.
  6. Repeat the process, if needed, until all of the limescale is completely gone.
