Oven Cleaning Tips – Make It Look Brand New Again

Report this content

We all know the oven can get dirty very quickly. From small spills to spitting meats, dirt, grime, and grease can quickly build up. When your oven is dirty, it will be much less efficient than a clean oven. Dirty ovens absorb heat, meaning it can take longer to cook your food and may even affect the quality of the food.

It is recommended that you clean your oven every few months. You may need to clean it more often if you tend to cook particularly spitty foods or if your oven gets dirty quicker than average. Just keep an eye on the condition of your oven and keep on top of cleaning it as needed.

If your oven is in need of a good cleaning, there are several things you can do. Oven cleaning can be quite a long process, especially when you factor in cleaning the racks and the outside of the oven as well. However, with the right advice, you can get each element clean quickly and easily.

Cleaning expert Sarah Dempsey at MyJobQuote.co.uk has created this fantastic guide on how to clean your oven properly and make it look brand new again. Below, you will find a range of tips on cleaning every element of the oven. Take a look at the guide below.

Cleaning The Oven With Oven Cleaner

A chemical oven cleaner is one of the best ways to make sure your oven is left looking sparkling clean.

Start by removing all of the large bits of food and crumbs from the oven, and then spray your chosen oven cleaner directly and evenly around the inside part of the oven. Leave this cleaner to sit in the oven for a minimum of 30 minutes to allow it to really get to work.

An oven cleaner will work to lift away all of the grease and grime from the oven's interior. From there, use a clean, damp cloth to wipe away the oven-cleaning solution. Then, you should use a clean, dry cloth to wipe the oven, ensuring that all of the chemical cleaner is removed and the oven is dry.

Natural Methods For Cleaning an Oven

If you would prefer a non-toxic method of cleaning your oven, baking soda and white vinegar will work wonders. You can likely find these two ingredients in the majority of kitchen cupboards. When these two ingredients are combined, they can provide exceptional cleaning power.

Start by making a paste out of baking soda and water - use a ratio of a few tablespoons of water with ½ a cup of baking soda. Once your mixture is a spreadable consistency, coat the interior of your oven generously. Pay attention to any areas that have extra build-up, and steer clear of any heating elements.

For the best results, allow the paste to sit on top of the grease overnight. This will provide enough time for the baking soda to sufficiently break down any grease, dirt, and grime. After around 12 hours, use a damp cloth to wipe over the oven. Try to remove as much of the mixture and grease as possible when doing so. If some areas remain stubborn, use a silicone spatula to help loosen the dirt and grime even further. Avoid using any metal tools, as these could cause damage to the inside of the oven.

Pour some white vinegar into a spray bottle and dilute with a little bit of water. Then, spray around the inside of the oven. Pay particular attention to any stubborn areas. Allow the vinegar to react with any of the remaining baking soda paste. You may notice it begin to fizz and foam a little.

Lastly, take a clean, damp cloth and wipe the inside of the oven to remove all of the white vinegar and any remaining paste. Add more water or vinegar, if needed, until your oven interior is sparkling clean.

If you don't have baking soda or white vinegar to hand, grab some lemons and squeeze the juice into an oven-proof tray or an oven-proof bowl filled with water. Place the tray inside your oven, close the door and let it run for 30 minutes. The lemon juice and steam will work wonders to help loosen any debris and melt away any grease or grime. Allow your oven to cool before wiping over the interior with a clean, damp cloth to remove the remaining residue.

How to Clean The Oven Racks

Clean Oven Racks With Oven Cleaning Bags

  1. Put on some cleaning gloves to protect your hands from the chemical reaction.
  2. Place your oven racks into the oven cleaning bags and then put these in the bathtub.

  4. Then, pour in roughly half a cup of warm water combined with a decent amount of liquid dish soap.
  5. Close the oven bag and leave the racks to soak for at least six hours. For the best results, you should try to leave them overnight.
  6. Turn the bag over halfway through the soaking time to ensure both sides are cleaned.
  7. Then, put your gloves on again and remove the oven racks from the bag.

Cleaning The Outside of The Oven

If you want to clean the outside of your oven, you’ll want to be careful not to use any harsh chemicals as these could affect the material of the oven.

Begin by using a damp cloth and rub the outside of the oven in circular motions. If there is a lot of dirt present or if the grime isn’t coming up easily with water, add a few drops of liquid dish soap to a bowl or bucket along with lukewarm water. Dip the cloth in this solution and then do the same again, working in circular motions.

Once you’ve finished cleaning the outside of the oven, use a clean, dry towel to dry it off. Try to make sure it is as dry as possible. This will help to prevent water marks.
