No matter what you do, there's no escaping those pesky pet hairs, but there are some things you can do to keep the hair problem under control. Cleaning expert Sarah Dempsey at MyJobQuote.co.uk has teamed up with several other cleaning and pet experts to come up with a list of the best hacks for keeping pet hair under control. Take a look at the list of tips below and say goodbye to your hairy home.

Keep on Top of Grooming

You can’t prevent your pets from shedding hair all over your home. However, you can control the amount of hair that they lose by keeping on top of regular grooming. “Drawing from my extensive tenure, I can attest to the significance of this practice.” says pet care expert, Stefan Fotelov from Serpact.

“By using specialized brushes and equipment, you can effectively capture loose fur during grooming, streamlining your efforts and yielding more satisfying results”, says Fotelov. You should aim to brush your pet’s hair several times a week and give them a bath roughly every four to six weeks. This will help you catch the hairs before they fall and spread around your home.

Make The Right Flooring and Furniture Choices

You won’t be able to change all of your furniture and flooring to pet-resistant types. However, if you’re planning to buy any new furniture pieces or flooring materials, consider your choices. For example, when choosing flooring, opt for hard flooring such as wood or vinyl.

Pet hair will cling to soft items like cushions, throws, and bedding. Choose synthetic materials whenever possible to prevent the hairs from sticking. It’s also a good idea to invest in some anti-static spray. This can help prevent pet hair from clinging to fabrics.

Cover Up Common Areas

If your pet has a favourite spot where they lie to lie or even a few favourite spots, cover these up with a blanket. This will allow the majority of hairs to fall onto the blanket rather than on the floor. The same goes if their favourite spot is on the sofa or bed – place a blanket down to prevent the majority of hairs from falling onto the furniture.

If you do this, you will then be able to wash the blankets regularly. Not only will this help to control the pet hairs, but it will also prevent pet smells from lingering on your furniture and carpets.

Do The Rubber Glove Trick

The rubber glove trick is so simple yet incredibly effective. According to cleaning expert, Angela Rubin from Hellamaid, all you need to do is the following; “Put on a pair of slightly damp rubber gloves and run your hands over surfaces where pet hair accumulates. The hair will stick to the gloves, making it easy to collect.”

This method works great for most surfaces including the sofa, bed, carpet, rugs, and more. You can then simply rinse the pet hair off the gloves and store them away for your next cleaning session.

Use a Damp Cloth

Damp cloths work in a similar way to damp rubber gloves. Microfibre cloths work very well. All you need to do is dampen the cloth and then rub it over the problem areas to get rid of the hairs.

If you’re cleaning a large area like the floor, consider using a damp mop. Simply dampen the mop and rub across the floor to pick up all of the loose hairs.

Use Sticky Tape

Sticky tape is another great tool for picking up pet hairs. All you need to do is wrap some tape around your hand with the sticky side up and then brush your hand against your furniture, clothes, and any other fabrics.

The pet hair will stick to the sticky tape right away. You may need to throw away the tape and reapply more tape every now and again as the tape fills with hair.

Make Use of The Washing Machine

You should aim to wash your pet's bedding and blankets regularly in the washing machine. Give them a good shake outside before and after placing them in the washing machine. If you add a bit of white vinegar to the wash cycle, this can help the hair detach from the fabrics much easier. Make sure you also get rid of any hairs left over in the drum after the washing machine.

Aleksandar Mishkov at The Daily Tail also has a great tip. Whenever cleaning your pet's items or even your own clothes in the washing machine, put some wet wipes in the drum as well. "I tried this trick three years ago, and I was amazed by the results. I still use it to this day. The wet wipes will suck out all the pet hair from your clothes," says Mishkov.

Use The Dryer to Loosen Hairs

Place any hair-covered clothes and blankets in the dryer and run a cycle on the cold setting. This will help to loosen any pet hairs. If you add a dryer sheet in with them, this will help to loosen them even more.

Make sure to empty the machine’s filter after the cycle and remove any loose hairs from the drum to prevent any issues with your dryer machine.

Vacuum Regularly

Vacuuming your home on a regular basis will help you to keep on top of the pet hair problem. You can use your vacuum on the floor and upholstery. For upholstery items, be sure to use an upholstery attachment on your vacuum.

You can also purchase special pet hair vacuums that can help to remove even more hairs and prevent allergens. No matter what type of vacuum you have, be sure to empty it regularly to prevent it from becoming blocked with hairs.
