Each year the number of accidents and deaths rises, in Canada and around the world. The citizens of Canada buried 1,162 people in 2008 due to drinking and driving.

The citizens of Canada buried 1,162 people in 2008 due to drinking and driving. That is a low estimate. An estimated 1,751,100 cars were involved in accidents that same year in Canada. Each year the number of accidents and deaths rises, in Canada and around the world. “This deadly combination of drinking and driving will continue to kill until people realize they must drink responsibly” says JF Dubreuil of Narconon Trois-Rivieres.

Part of the effects of alcohol is poor judgment. Normally, someone who has been drinking doesn’t get behind the wheel of the car intending to hit another car or a pedestrian. Chances are very good, however, that someone with that person does know they are too drunk to drive. It’s time to realize that taking away a friends car keys is better than attending their funeral. While it would be convenient for everyone to be able to just tend to their own affairs, the situation calls for action by pub owners and patrons as well as family members.

One death due to drunk driving is too many. Their family would say the same. Drinking responsibly is imperative in order to save lives. Acting responsibly if a friend or relative is too drunk to drive is also necessary. Too many Canadian lives are being lost in the wake of drinking and driving. The number of deaths in 2011 is expected to be even higher than those in 2008.

Besides the deaths caused by drinking and driving, an estimated 149,028 injuries were reported. These include minor injuries and life altering injuries. Most of those injuries were innocent people. Often, the person drinking walks away while the innocent are taken away in an ambulance. Drinking and driving must stop, and soon.
