Telling someone to stop drinking, along with a firm zero tolerance rules can, however, help lead the alcoholic to treatment. Along with confronting them with their alcoholism, there must be new rules set forth which make it clear that drinking will not be allowed in your home, or in your life.

Alcoholism is not something people do just to pass the time. It is something that can begin innocently enough, but then becomes ingrained into the very being of the individual. Instead of the person controlling the alcohol, the alcohol begins controlling the alcoholic. Telling them to “stop drinking” simply is not going to work. You may as well be telling them to stop breathing. Oh, it is possible for them to stop drinking, but it takes a well established and proven program to help them succeed - Narconon Trois-Rivieres says it provides such a program.

In order for someone to stop drinking, they must not only stop the intake of alcohol, but learn what triggers their desire. They must also own up to what their alcoholism has done in their lives, and the lives of loved ones. They must also rid their body completely of alcohol. Finally, they must learn new and better ways to deal with the stressors in their lives. This cannot be accomplished by simply telling them to stop drinking.

Telling someone to stop drinking, along with a firm zero tolerance rules can, however, help lead the alcoholic to treatment. Along with confronting them with their alcoholism, there must be new rules set forth which make it clear that drinking will not be allowed in your home, or in your life. That gives an answer to “or what?” when you tell them to stop drinking. The reasons for them to stop must be clear. If there are no consequences, other than those they are able to deny, there isn’t much motivation to stop drinking.

Simply by telling someone to stop drinking, you are only beating your head against a wall. It may make you feel better saying it, but it won’t be effective unless you back up the words with action. Intervention is not always easy, and it is best to get the advice of trained addiction counselors like the ones found at Narconon Trois-Rivieres, but it can prove successful. Back up the words with zero tolerance and force the alcoholic to see that they are not fooling anyone with their alcoholism or their denial.

Many times, the alcoholic wants to stop drinking, but they don’t know how, or they don’t believe they can. This is part of the alcoholism. They can stop drinking, and often it is loved ones that help them to realize that. Actions speak louder than words, as the saying goes, so backing up “stop drinking” with some serious action may make all the difference in the world.
