FUNDING AWARDED FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE REGULATORY PROCESS FOR THE BAKKEN PIPELINE PROJECT CANADA

CALGARY The National Energy Board (the Board) has awarded a total of $75,000 to eight applicants to support their participation in the regulatory process for the Bakken Pipeline Project Canada (Bakken Pipeline Project) in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Funding recipients are the following:

  • Yorkton Tribal Council
  • Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations
  • Carry the Kettle First Nation
  • Eastern Region III Metis Nation
  • Ocean Man First Nation
  • Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation
  • Sakimay First Nation
  • White Bear First Nations

This funding is being made available to help recipients review and comment on a project application submitted by the proponent, Enbridge Bakken Pipeline Company Inc. Funding must be used to prepare for and participate in the hearing process that was made public by the Board on Thursday, 17 March 2011.

An independent funding review committee reviewed the requests and provided recommendations on funding allocations. The committee’s report, along with further information on the project, is available on the Board's website (www.neb-one.gc.ca) under Public Registries / Anticipated Applications.

The Bakken Pipeline Project would involve the construction of 123.4 kilometres of new pipeline of which 77.3 kilometres would be alongside and contiguous to existing rights-of-way and utility corridors.

The Bakken crude oil pipeline and its associated facilities would be located between Steelman, Saskatchewan and Cromer, Manitoba. The associated facilities would also include the construction of a new pump station near Steelman. If approved, the construction is expected to start in the first half of 2012 and be completed in late 2012.

The NEB is an independent federal regulator of several parts of Canada's energy industry. Its purpose is to regulate pipelines, energy development and trade in the Canadian public interest.
