Farmers and growers will open their gates on Open Farm Sunday (June 13, 2010) to provide an unforgettable day out down on the farm

Open Farm Sunday is co-ordinated by LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) and is actively supported by the NFU. The event helps consumers learn how farmers care for the countryside while producing safe, wholesome food. Visitors can also find out why farming matters in their everyday lives via the NFU campaign www.farmingmatters.co.uk In the South East, there are around 50 Open Farm Sunday events being run by NFU members from the Chilterns to the Isle of Wight. Their businesses range from mixed farming businesses to lettuce units, commercial orchards and strawberry farms. Activities may include a farm walk or nature trail, tractor and trailer rides, a chance to meet livestock, sample local food and activities for kids. Among the hosts is West Sussex lettuce grower Mariella Fleming of Goldenplain who is opening Southend Farm, Donnington near Chichester. Here visitors can take a tractor and trailer ride, see lettuce harvesting in progress, meet wildlife experts and beekeepers and taste local produce served by chef and food writer Rosemary Moon. Children can do a spot of pond-dipping and meet friendly farm animals. There will be a barbecue and local produce will also be on sale on the day. Gates are open from 10am until 5pm. Mariella Fleming says: “Come and find out how we grow our salad crops and what we do to look after lapwings, bees and water voles. I’m encouraging people to take a canal boat from the Waterside pub in the Canal Basin along the Chichester Ship Canal. You can book through me and we will then arrange to collect you with a tractor and trailer which will then transport you to Southend Farm. Visitors can expect tractor and trailer rides and there will be sheep shearing, spinning and weaving demonstrations. Attractions include arts and crafts, an NFU stand with Britains farm models competition for children and a small fun fair. A wealth of local produce will be on sale including hot food and Gloucester Old Spot pig roasts. Hampshire dairy farmers Mark and Joanna Cheyney of Middle Farm, Cheriton near Alresford, have laid on a wealth of attractions for visitors. There is an opportunity to see cows being milked. Visitors can also watch sheep shearing and try their hand at calf handling. Also on display will be poultry and pigs, barn owls, honey bees and vintage machinery. Local produce on sale includes a hog roast and strawberries ans cream. Hampshire growers The New Forest Fruit Company Ltd & Boyd Farming will be giving visitors a peek behind the scenes of commercial strawberry production for supermarkets at East Boldre near Lymington.
