RESTON, VA. (September 7, 2016) – The National Wildlife Federation is pleased to announce the official launch of RANGER RICK CUB, a bi-monthly magazine for children ages 0-4. The subscriptions will be for sale online at www.nwf.org/cubspecial starting today.
“From the moment babies can focus their eyes they are innately curious about wildlife and the natural world. RANGER RICK CUB will introduce infants and toddlers to animals and the outdoors in an engaging, interactive format,” said Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation. “This new magazine will build upon our proud 50 year history of our award-winning magazines, RANGER RICK and RANGER RICK JR.”
In addition to educating toddlers about wildlife, RANGER RICK CUB will teach young children numbers, letters, and colors, as well as physical properties such as soft or big. The magazine will foster pre-reading skills by helping children increase their vocabulary, recognize letters and sounds, and helping them become familiar with how books work. Sample content includes:
— Very simple stories about animals
— Learning activities that ask children to sort, find, or compare objects
— Animal photographs that highlight letter and number recognition
— Sing-song poems about animals
— Animal photographs that teach familiar adjectives and verbs
— Simple ideas about things little kids can do outside
“RANGER RICK CUB is a fun title that parents and grandparents will enjoy with the little ones in their lives. Reading out loud to children sets the stage for later reading mastery,” said Bob Harper, executive publisher for publications at the National Wildlife Federation. “Each story and activity will also include tips for extending the learning into everyday life, including suggestions for connecting small children with nature in an age-appropriate and accessible manner.”
The launch of the new title comes during an exciting time for the National Wildlife Federation’s publications. RANGER RICK will be marking its 50th anniversary in 2017 and its beloved Ranger Rick character recently received an updated look—shaped by five-time Emmy nominee Parker Jacobs, the art director for the hit children’s television series Yo Gabba Gabba!. The National Wildlife Federation will be also be releasing approximately 50 new Ranger Rick children’s books over the course of the next three years.
NATIONAL WILDLIFE, RANGER RICK and RANGER RICK JR. currently have a combined circulation of over one million and are available in print and as digital apps. The launch of RANGER RICK CUB will allow families with very young children an opportunity to learn about wildlife and the great outdoors while supporting one of America’s oldest and largest wildlife conservation groups.
