Scottsdale, Arizona based Firetrace International is pleased to introduce its Firetrace Methane Detection System (FMDS). Designed for use with Firetrace Suppression Systems, FMDS is a potentially life saving solution for the detection and early warning of dangerous levels of hydrocarbons in transit bus and other alternative fuel vehicles.

The system includes multiple point detection sensors installed at key areas of risk, connected to a control box located near the driver. The control box provides an audible and visual indication of the system status and warnings, allowing the driver to react rapidly to a potentially dangerous situation.

Scott Starr, director of marketing at Firetrace, said; “Methane is a potentially explosive by-product of LNG and CNG fuelled engines. It made sense to us to combine a system of detection with our fire suppression systems to provide a complete protection solution for buses.”

The FMDS is a purpose built system designed for the harsh conditions expected with transit applications. The sensor housings are aluminium, the control box ABS plastic and the system has a temperature tolerance of -40C to 85C. It has a progressive warning system, the first alert kicks in at detection of 25 percent of the lower explosive limit and the second at 50 percent and at 85db the audible warnings will be hard to miss. This is combined with an LED light display module to visually alert and provide a secondary warning system. The control box requires either 12-24 VDC rated input or 12-24 VDC relay output with 15 second time delay and has a module port to establish alternative functions, such as fire extinguishing activation and relays.
