PacketFront, the leader in Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) technology, has enabled primary and secondary schools in Eindhoven, Holland, to benefit from a new open access broadband network called Schoolnet.

Schoolnet is a joint initiative of the city of Eindhoven and the educational sector with the aim to raise the quality of education and communication by creating a broadband network delivering a large variety of services to the connected schools. Approximately 60 schools are connected, and more will be added in the coming months.

The project is implemented by the Network Exploitatie Maatschappij Eindhoven (NEME). NEME provides a Managed Ethernet Service to the connected schools next to its existing successful FttH/B (Fiber-to-the-Home/Business) deployment, which is also based on PacketFront’s technology. The Managed Ethernet Service connects the schools to a digital marketplace where they have access to a large variety of services, including internet access and VoIP as well as specific educational services, such as Virtual Classes, Living Library and Digital Whiteboards.

NEME is responsible for the realization of the passive and active infrastructure, as well as the ongoing operation and maintenance of the network. The active infrastructure was delivered by PacketFront and is managed using PacketFront’s award winning BECS and Broadband Business Engine (BBE) management systems for end-to-end automation and control.

“We are very happy to contribute to the educational sector and provide the youngest citizens of Eindhoven the latest state-of-the-art technology and offer them the best learning experience. PacketFront’s solution allowed us to quickly implement this service, complementing our existing FttH/B services.” says Jan Herps, director of NEME.

The Operations and Maintenance of the network has been outsourced to Teleplaz@, a certified PacketFront partner. “Being able to manage both our FttH/B connections as well as the Managed Ethernet Services through one single BECS/BBE system provides us significant operational advantages and cost savings.” says Robert Hesselman, director of Teleplaz@.
