NO TO PINOCHET: THE PABLO LARRAIN COLLECTION (18) SET FOR DVD RELEASE

Report this content

In 2013, acclaimed Chilean director Pablo Larraín’s ‘Pinochet trilogy’ reached its pinnacle when NO was nominated for an Academy Award. Larraín has vowed never to make another film on Chile’s darkest days but now, for the first time, all three acclaimed films will be released as part of one set. NO to Pinochet: The Pablo LArraín Collection (18) is available to own on 16 September 2013 courtesy of Network Releasing, RRP £29.99.

This definitive set includes films charting life in Chile at various stages of the Pinochet regime and will be released to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the coup that brought him to power. POST MORTEM is set amidst the backdrop of the 1973 coup, TONY MANERO is the tale of a Saturday Night Fever obsessive psychopath living under the regime at the height of its power. NO stars Gael García Bernal. In the arthouse hit of 2013 with the true story of the election campaign that brought democracy to Chile.

TONY MANERO (18)

Santiago de Chile, 1978. As Pinochet's oppressive dictatorship stamps down hard on civil liberties, Raúl Peralta escapes from the tedium of everyday life by leading a small group of dancers and obsessing about Tony Manero, John Travolta’s character in Saturday Night Fever. Raúl lives for Saturday nights, when he unleashes his passion for the film’s music by imitating his idol. His dream of becoming a successful showbiz star takes a step closer to reality when the national television station announces a Tony Manero impersonation contest – a contest that Raul will go to any lengths to win…

The pitch black comedy TONY MANERO stars the exceptional Alfredo Castro whom Larraín would collaborate with again on POST MORTEM and NO.

POST MORTEM (15)

Larraín steps back in time to the 'sealed box' of Chile during one of its darkest periods – 1973's military coup. Against this terrifying and murderous backdrop POST MORTEM tells the story of an apparently insignificant and charmless couple (Alfredo Castro and Antonia Zegers) whose poignant relationship is played out amid the death and destruction that results from military ideals imposed with no care for their cost or consequences. Employing a still, dream-like cinematography, Larraín weaves a complex and poetic tale from this terrifyingly tragic situation.

NO (15)

The trilogy was appropriately completed in 2013 with the Oscar nominated NO starring Gael García Bernal – the inspiring true story about one of the most unlikely outcomes in world history. With only 15 minutes of TV exposure in the early hours of the morning, how did a small team of people use advertising to remove Pinochet from power?
