Advanced compression and new protection technologies integral to an expanding IP portfolio

Sandefjord, Norway—11 September 2013—At IBC (stand 1.B71) Nevion, a leading provider of next-generation managed media transport, will highlight enhanced uncompressed as well as compressed—JPEG 2000 and H.264—media transport solutions, and new protection schemes for the most optimised and reliable signal transport over IP.

“Transporting contribution media feeds between venues, studios, and broadcast centres efficiently, reliably and cost effectively is at the heart of today’s broadcast environment,” said Arnhild Schia, chief commercial officer, Nevion. “We’re eager to show IBC attendees how optimised live media transport can make the best use of bandwidth, save resources and help take advantage of new revenue streams.”

Nevion provides a range of standards-compliant and highly interoperable options for video transport over IP/Ethernet networks, from bit-perfect uncompressed transport to visually lossless JPEG 2000 compression, to highly efficient H.264/AVC compression. Nevion’s JPEG 2000 compression options are ideally suited to live remote production, saving costs by centralising editing and production resources and ensuring improved production headroom and ultimately better picture quality. For bandwidth-limited environments, Nevion’s H.264/AVC compression technology is a smart balance between quality, latency and cost, providing flexibility and multifunctional utility in a single module.

Nevion’s protection portfolio, encompassing both industry standard and enhanced protection mechanisms, deliver precise, end-to-end reliability spanning a multitude of applications - video, analogue/digital audio, compressed services and E1 emulation. Seamless switching solutions for ASI and transport streams over IP include intelligent 1+1 redundancy changeover between two transport streams, greatly improving system reliability and availability. To minimise the impact of immediate network failures on live media services, Nevion’s next-generation protection technologies are implemented into video edge hardware.

Nevion has enhanced Forward Error Correction (FEC) with the development of an extended FEC algorithm to cope with intermittent packet loss as well as network outages. For even greater protection, Nevion’s patented Streaming Intelligent Packet Switching (SIPS) provides perfect protection switching of audio and video streams across dual, geographically independent IP links. SIPS technology has been expanded to include RTP Synchronisation at the receiving end and Launch Delay Offset (LDO) when IP path diversity is not possible or can’t be guaranteed.

The comprehensive capabilities of Nevion’s media edge hardware combined with Nevion’s latest release of VideoIPath 3.0, the managed media platform, raise the bar on the performance of managed media transport over IP and IP/Ethernet infrastructure with enhanced flexibility and service protection.
