Chicago Church Works as a Change Agent to Transform Neighborhood Crime Haven

Chicago, IL Nov. 28th, 2011--

WHAT: In an effort to bring attention to the extreme violence on Chicago’s south side Woodlawn and Englewood communities, a local pastor with a membership of over 3000 is camping out in a tent on the roof of an abandoned motel for 21 days or until the funds are raised to build a community center through Project H.O.O.D. (Helping Others Obtain Destiny).

On today Monday, November 28, 2011 at 9:10am CST, Mayor Rahm Emmanuel called Pastor Corey Brooks to encourage his radical move to bring attention to the excessive violence on Chicago’s south side communities of Woodlawn and Englewood. The phone call was received while Pastor Brooks maintains his vigil of the roof of the Super Motel at 6625 S. King Dr.

The mayor commended Pastor Brooks and applauded his efforts and wished that there would be more people to take a stand and bring attention and take action against violence.  In the same conversation, the mayor thanked pastor Brooks for his persistence and indicated that “This will help all of us.”

Pastor Brooks stated that he loves the city of Chicago and is a big supporter of the mayor’s efforts and was very appreciative that the mayor would take time out of his schedule to offer his support and encouragement to the Project H.O.O.D. initiative.  Pastor Brooks also stated to the mayor, that “I intend to stay on the roof until we are able to secure the abandoned building so that it can be turned into a community and economic development center.”

Pastor Corey Brooks has been on the roof now for 6 days and counting and has been fasting, on water only for 15 days.
