Pastor Corey Brooks brings national campaign against violence to Kansas City, KS

WHAT: Pastor Desmond Lamb and Alvin Brooks, ADHOC Group Against Crime, are hosting the “Rooftop Pastor” from an inner city Chicago church for a "Non- Violence Rally & Walk" on August 11th from 1-3 p.m. The rally is also expected to have Commissioner Terrance Maddox, live entertainment, and many families that have been affected by gun violence.
Rev. Corey Brooks, Sr. founded New Beginnings Church of Chicago, an urban, non-denominational in the inner city on Chicago’s South Side. Brooks’ messages of restoration and reconciliation have attracted over 2,500 members and he has been the force behind Project HOOD (Helping Others Obtain Destiny), a non-violence community initiative which seeks to foster collaboration between the private sector, public sector and faith-based organizations in order to combat “four primary ills of urban America: Social dysfunctions, Educational deprivation, Economic deficiencies and Spiritual dehydration.
Brooks' just recently received the 2012 10th annual Steve Harvey Ford Hoodie Award for the Best Community Leader, beating out several other contestants across the country and is most noted for his vigil on the roof of an abandoned motel for 94 days through the winter of Chicago, earning him the alias "The Rooftop Pastor." Not long afterwards, he took to the road BY FOOT June 5, 2012, walking with a team of young people from New York to the Staples Center in LA, covering over 3000 miles, all to raise a greater awareness about the increase in violence that plagues Chicago and many urban communities. Additionally, Brooks' is trying to raise funds to build a community center to aid in violence prevention in his own Woodlawn community, while acknowledging with each step, that violence is not a geographical or racial issue – but an issue of humanity as witnessed in Aurora, CO and Oak Creek, WI.
As of July 24, 2012 Chicago’s homicide rate had soared to 294 deaths and over 1275 shootings. The city officials have been hard pressed to provide relief to crime ridden communities looking for hope in violence prevention. Though Pastor Brooks’ own community has seen only one murder since his congregation took to patrolling the streets under his HOODvasion effort he acknowledges much more has to be done.
He will be speaking at a non-violence rally hosted by local community activists and pastors this Saturday with a message of hope and change!
