WHERE:              Project Hood Headquarters,

6625 S. Martin Luther King Dr.

Known as the Rooftop Preacher; Rev. Corey Brooks has been lauded by Mayor Rahm Emanuel as a man of God who not only “talks the talk, but walks the walk.”  This description of the man who spent 94 days atop the roof of an abandoned motel in the dead of a Chicago winter is even more apropos given his next endeavor.  The Pastor of New Beginnings Church of Chicago and the visionary behind Project H.O.O.D. (Helping Others Obtain Destiny) took to the road BY FOOT June 5, 2012 for an over 3000 mile journey to raise awareness about violence that plagues Chicago and many urban communities and to raise funds to build a community center to aid in prevention in his own Woodlawn community. After completing the first leg of his journey, his path brings him to the starting point, Project HOOD headquarters in Woodlawn.

As of June 30, 2012 Chicago’s homicide rate had soared to 267 deaths and over 1267 shootings. The city officials have been hard pressed to provide relief to crime ridden communities looking for hope in violence prevention. Pastor Brooks while returning under the somber circumstances is returning home with the hope of rallying all of Chicago behind his call to action – END VIOLENCE NOW.

His return will be marked by several events:

  • On Friday Pastor Brooks will arrive in Chicago at New Beginnings Church around 8pm from the Gary to Chicago leg.
  • Saturday morning (July 14) Pastor Brooks will be at Hood Fest; part of New Beginnings Church’s effort to reclaim Woodlawn with their "No Murders in Woodlawn" plan. HOODvasion works to encourage and engage local residents and church members to get active, patrol the streets together on weekend nights and enjoy the neighborhood together outdoors on Saturday afternoons.
  • Saturday evening, Project Hood will hold an “invite only” fundraiser hosted by former Chicago Urban League President, Cheryl Jackson at Logan Center for the Arts 915 East 60th Street
  • Sunday Morning – Pastor Brooks will conduct morning services at New Beginnings Church of Chicago at 11:00am

These events will serve momentum building for the culminating event, Project HOOD Walk Across Chicago on Sunday July 15th. The events will start with a press conference (3:30pm.)   Dignitaries on hand include Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Governor Pat Quinn and several area churches and synagogues will be represented.  Walgreen Co. will also announce financial support of Project Hood in the form of a challenge grant.

The Citywide walk will start at 4:00pm, at the site that will house the community center and proceed with thousands of people in attendance to Chicago’s picturesque Navy Pier. The sites of both locations could not provide any more vibrant an illustration of the contrast between economically blighted, crime ridden Woodlawn and Navy Pier’s opulent, frame worthy scenery.
