São Paulo – May 10, 2013. The New Cities Foundation today announced the names of 23 Latin America-based experts who will be joining discussions on the city of tomorrow at the New Cities Summit in São Paulo, this June 4-6. Headlining the list are Fernando Haddad, Mayor of São Paulo and Carolina Toha, Mayor of Santiago de Chile.

Commenting on São Paulo as the chosen location of the New Cities Summit 2013, the world-renowned architect and New Cities Foundation Trustee Daniel Libeskind said: "São Paulo has incredible energy and vitality and also a vision for the 21st century. It is the perfect place for the important discussions we will have at the New Cities Summit."

Oded Grajew, Founder and general coordinator of the Executive Secretariat, Rede Nossa São Paulo, said: “There is an increasing awareness that it is no longer possible for humanity to maintain the current development model. We must create the transition to a sustainable development. There is no better place to exercise this agenda than urban centers, where, today, live 85% of the Brazilian population and half of the people on the planet. This context justifies the importance of a meeting like the New Cities Summit 2013. The gathering of leaders and experts will certainly lead to new solutions and, consequently, to new challenges. I, as one of the creators of the Programa Cidades Sustentáveis [Sustainable Cities Program], believe that I have much to contribute. We are facing an opportunity to create a new standard for the relationship of citizens with politics, where managers make concrete commitments and citizens follow the results of these commitments.”

Themed around The Human City, the New Cities Summit aims to address pressing urban issues and shape debates on the city of tomorrow. The speaker program comprises the top urban decision-makers and innovators who have the power to make a positive impact on how we create our cities. The event is run by international non-profit the New Cities Foundation, as part of its overall mission to build more just, dynamic, creative and sustainable world cities.
