April 4, 2012—Newark, NJ—New Jersey SEEDS, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving educational access for highly-motivated, low-income students, announced a new anniversary logo, designed to celebrate two decades of changing the lives of students across the state. In developing its new look, SEEDS was searching for a design to honor 20 years of achievement and represent the ambition, vivacity and dedication of students and alumni.

To create SEEDS’ new anniversary logo, the organization approached The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art’s Professional Practice Class. Under the guidance of Mindy Lang, Director of the Center for Design and Typography, the class provided pro bono design services to New Jersey SEEDS.

The winning design was created by senior Sooyeon Kim. Sooyeon explained that her design “reflects youth, growth and hope. The design has the potential to continue expanding the folded shape to represent the opening of new chapters for students and reflect the organization’s forward-looking mindset. The geometric form illustrates the shape of opened books and alludes to the idea of education. The five letters of the acronym break out of the geometric form, creating a more active, vibrant and playful logo to better represent the motivated and high-achieving students of New Jersey SEEDS.”

“Sooyeon’s design brings a vibrant, upbeat look to a well-established organization,” says SEEDS’ President Ronni Denes. “We wanted to usher in our 21st year with the same excitement and energy that our founders brought to the table when the organization was established to confront the profound lack of opportunity in the state’s urban school districts. Since then, we’ve enabled 1,630 students to receive the education that they want—and deserve. This anniversary celebration is the perfect time to launch our new look while honoring our history and all our students have accomplished.”

The anniversary logo and associated branding were formally launched at the Leading Change Benefit, held last evening at Maritime Parc in Jersey City. The event honored two decades of changing the lives of high-achieving students from low-income families and paid tribute to transformational leaders who have made exceptional contributions to educational access. Honorees included the New Jersey SEEDS founders—John Duffy, William V. Engel, John Hanly, Blair MacInnes, Betty Marsh and Mark Sandler; along with Barclays and Co-Chief Executive of Corporate and Investment Banking Jerry del Missier; Panasonic Corporation of North America and Chairman and CEO Joseph M. Taylor; and Orange School District Superintendent Ronald C. Lee.
