United States District Court Chief Judge to Present Remarks at Event

What: At its annual Law Day Luncheon, the New York County Lawyers’ Association (NYCLA) will present the Justice Louis J. Capozzoli Gavel Award to Hon. Sherry Klein Heitler, Administrative Judge for Civil Matters, First Judicial District. Hon. Loretta A. Preska, Chief Judge, United States District Court, Southern District of New York, will present Law Day Remarks.

Who:Justice Heitler earned her Juris Doctor at Fordham University School of Law and, thereafter, began her legal career as a law assistant in the Civil Court of the City of New York.  She then founded the firm of Heitler & Levy, P.C. and served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Bernard Baruch College.  In 1993 she was elected to the Civil Court of the City of New York for a term beginning in January 1994. She was designated as an Acting Supreme Court Justice of the New York State Supreme Court in 1996 and was elected to that court as a Justice in 2000.  In 2007 she was appointed as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Term, First Department.  In addition, in 2008 she was assigned to administer all New York City Asbestos Litigation cases.  In 2009 she was appointed as the Administrative Judge for Civil Matters, First Judicial District, at which time she left the Appellate Term, but continued to administer all asbestos cases.

Judge Preska, also a Fordham University School of Law graduate, was appointed United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York in 1992 and Chief Judge of that Court in 2009.  Judge Preska received a B.A. from the College of St. Rose in Albany, New York in 1970, a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in 1973, and an LL.M. in Trade Regulation from New York University Law School in 1978. Following graduation from Fordham, Judge Preska was an associate at Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP and an associate and, beginning in January 1983, a partner at Hertzog, Calamari & Gleason until her induction as a United States District Judge.
