The New York County Lawyers’ Association’s (NYCLA) Women’s Rights Committee will present Donna Lieberman, Executive Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU), with the 15th Annual Edith I. Spivack Award for her work in the area of women’s rights. Carlin Meyer, Professor of Law, New York Law School, and Director, The Diane Abbey Law Center for Children and Families, will give introductory remarks. Free and open to the public. Ms. Lieberman is the founder and former director of the NYCLU Reproductive Rights Project and has been a staunch defender of reproductive rights. Under Ms. Lieberman’s leadership, the NYCLU has successfully defended pregnant and parenting women and girls against discrimination and fought for the rights of minors to obtain information and services they need to protect their health when they are sexually active; advocated for confidentiality in reproductive health care; opposed exclusion of medical and early surgical abortion from the scope of advanced practice clinicians and family physicians; and represented women who have been discriminated against for breastfeeding in public. Ms. Lieberman also is the author of many op-ed pieces and publications, such as “Legal Issues in the Reproductive Health Care of Adolescents” and “The Rights of Pregnant and Parenting Teens.”

About the Spivack Award:

The Edith I. Spivack Award was named for the woman who was the driving force for the establishment of NYCLA’s Women’s Rights Committee in 1972, actively recruiting outstanding women attorneys and playing a significant role in identifying crucial areas of discrimination against women. The award was established in 1997 to honor Ms. Spivack and mark the 25thanniversary of NYCLA’s Women’s Rights Committee. Past recipients of the award include Hon. Betty Weinberg Ellerin (1999), Kathryn Kolbert, Esq. (2011), Geraldine A. Ferraro, Esq. (2008), Hon. Carolyn B. Maloney (2006), Susan B. Lindenauer, Esq. (2002), and Hon. Judith S. Kaye (1997).
