Pacaya Volano’s Hike is More Accessible than ever with New Mobile Application
The Guatemala Tourism Board is pleased to announce a new mobile application specific to the destination’s renowned Pacaya Volcano. An excursion growing in popularity and most recently named one of the “World Best Hikes” by National Geographic, the Pacaya Volcano presents the remarkable and singular experience of safely exploring an active volcano in the heart of Central America.
“While Guatemala is well-known for its authentic and rich cultural landscape, we also seek to emphasize the inimitable adventures available in the country, among them volcano exploration,” explains Pedro Duchez, the Director of the Guatemala Tourism Board. “Hiking Pacaya is one of the many treasures available to thrill-seekers and adventure travelers, and this application serves as a convenient, user-friendly guidebook, providing helpful information that will allow explorers to be better informed and feel comfortable during the excursion.”
Located in San Vicente, approximately 20 miles from Guatemala City, the Pacaya Volcano trek can be completed in approximatley four hours. The application facilitates the trip by guiding visitors and providing useful information and tips. Among the resources available in the app is an informational tab to learn more about the volcano itself, recommendations for planning the excursion including details on how to get there, a map of the site that highlights key areas, schedules for treks, rates and photography. Available at the App Store or Google Play Store, the application can be viewed in English or Spanish and is able to be used on-or-offline. “This year, approximately 60,000 people (up until September) climbed the Pacaya Volcano. Of those, 70% were international tourists and 30% were locals,” shared Humberto Morales, the park administrator.
In addition to the course-plotting capabilities available via the new application, travelers can also find nearly 100 certified guides on-site who provide navigational services to tourists. The National Park and local authorities are also currently working on plans to further develop the area and elevate visitor management. Among those plans include a complete resort with facilities and amenities for travelers.
