Guatemala Tourism Board Showcases Attractive Fishing Offering in South Florida
Showcasing Guatemala's acclaimed fishing experience, the Tourism Board has embarked on a South Florida roadshow, visiting local marinas to share images and information about this popular activity. Recognized as the "Billfish Capital of the World," Guatemala's sailfish-rich waters are ideal for both seasoned and beginner anglers. With South Florida also being a popular destination for water lovers, the Guatemala Tourism Board incorporated this initiative into their 2015 "Life Lessons" marketing campaign as a way to inform travelers of the many activities available in the country, including top-notch fishing.
"This was a creative way to get the word out in South Florida; we want active travelers to know that Guatemala is also an excellent adventure option with fantastic fishing opportunities," explains Pedro Duchez, Director of the Tourism Board. In addition to Guatemala holding the record for most sailfish released in 2013, the country ranked #7 in The Billfish Report's countdown of the top billfisheries of the year.
Guatemala's secret is in "the pocket," a deep underwater canyon located off its Pacific coast, 15 miles wide and approximately 4,000 feet deep, which acts as a hunting ground for trophy fish. Guatemala's waters hold the highest concentration of billfish in the world. This paired with the law which prohibits commercial fishing for sailfish allows leisure anglers with a non-stop, challenging outing.
"While there is great fishing available all year long in Guatemala, fishing season begins in October and goes through mid-June, when anglers can expect 15 to 20 releases per day, even up to 40 releases," explains Brenda Zaldaña, the Director of Marketing for the Tourism Board.
