Mayor Mancera highlighted his commitment to transform Mexico City into an Environmentally Sustainable and Competitive Metropolis
On Monday, May 6, Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera participated in a meeting with the C-40 Group, which brings together the world’s megacities’ leaders, to discuss the new Clinton Global Initiative Commitment to Action. The new program provides cities with tools to address climate change and build more sustainable future for their residents.
At the event, Mayor Mancera shared information about Mexico City Master Plan for Urban Development and Environment initiatives and reinforced his commitment to responsible governance to transform Mexico City into a sustainable metropolis. He stated that for the first time, the Minister of Urban Development & Housing and the Minister of Environment will work together on this Master Plan, a vital program for the improvement of Mexico City.
“Mexico City invests 35 percent of the local budget for the Green Plan that focuses on the effects of climate change as well as its prevention,” said Mayor Mancera. He also highlighted how his administration is addressing some of Mexico City’s current challenges, such as high density areas and water supply concerns, through infrastructure investments, a redesign of the water system, as well as a housing program. The Mayor also highlighted how the city is working on alternative options for waste to eliminate the use of landfills.
As part of his remarks, Mayor Mancera stated, “quality of life is directly linked to environmental factors such as resilience and adaptation to climate change, the use of natural resources, improved transportation and traffic, as well as increased recreational activities.”
During his visit to New York, Mayor Mancera also met with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to further discuss urban planning, effective public transportation and mobility programs, as well as ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
In a meeting with George Fertitta, CEO of New York City & Company, Mayor Mancera shared information about joint tourism initiatives and ways to better position Mexico City as an attractive tourist destination to New Yorkers, highlighting the Mexican capital’s unique attractions.
