B&ES URGES CONSTRUCTION CLIENTS TO ADOPT 10 POINT PROCUREMENT CHECKLIST

The Building & Engineering Services Association has introduced a 10-Point Checklist to help construction companies make the right decision when they choose sub-contractors for building services work.

8 November 2013 – There is widespread recognition that construction projects have become ever more complex, in turn making the procurement process far more demanding; requiring considerable expertise to deliver the building engineering services – especially the renewable and environmental technologies that modern buildings demand.

Selecting the right building engineering services contractor has therefore become an increasingly critical decision.  To help construction companies, B&ES, the Building & Engineering Services Association (formerly HVCA), has introduced a 10 Point Checklist to help evaluate the suitability of sub-contractors tendering for building services work.

The checklist covers key decision making issues such as:

  • Regular, independent verification of competence and professionalism
  • Financial stability
  • Code of fair trading
  • Technical competence
  • Health and safety
  • CDM regulations
  • Building regulations
  • Insurance cover
  • Environmental management
  • Equal opportunities

Roderick Pettigrew, Chief Executive of B&ES, comments: “The prolonged recession has resulted in structural changes to the building and construction sector, but even without the recession the industry has changed – it’s now far more complex and technically demanding.  The supply chain needs building engineering services specialists that are fully equipped to design and install truly state-of-the-art systems – specialists with the range of skills and resources needed to meet client priorities and to deliver on value, on time and on budget.

“Getting it wrong means dissatisfied customers, clients and building users; unnecessarily high construction costs; expensive variations to the project plan and a continuous need to put things right.

“Conversely, getting it right means satisfied customers, clients and building users; optimised construction costs; adherence to the original project plan and a minimum of things that need to be put right.

“This is why we have introduced a 10 Point Checklist – to help construction companies make sure the contractors they choose for building services work are up to the job.”

The details of each of the 10 key considerations in the checklist can be found in the client area of the B&ES website at:  www.b-es.org/client.
