Bake a cake and raise money for cancer charity

28 May 2014 – Victoria Van Der Westhuizen (née Eastman) died of cancer earlier this year at the age of 29.  Victoria had taken up baking in the last year of her life and it gave her huge pleasure creating cakes and sharing them with family and friends.

Victoria’s driving desire throughout her fight with cancer was to beat the disease and live to spend time with her husband and raise a family.  She wanted to use her positivity and energy to find a way to help support others through their battle with cancer.  That was her promise.

Victoria did not survive her cancer but through the charity set up in her memory, VICTORIA’S PROMISE, her family are determined to fulfil her dream and strive to create initiatives to directly support and improve the quality of life for young women battling the disease in whatever way they need during their treatment and beyond, as well as supporting the cutting edge cancer research currently being undertaken by Professor Justin Stebbing and his team.

A whole host of fundraising initiatives are planned and what could be more appropriate than Victoria Sponge Bake Day on Saturday 14th June 2014.  So help fulfil Victoria’s dream, a dream we all have, and bake a cake, share it with family, friends and colleagues; enjoy your time together and please donate £3.00 (or your chosen amount) to the charity for each slice shared.

Businesses, retail outlets, cafés and restaurants can also help to raise funds by serving Victoria Sponge Cake to customers and staff, in canteens and staff rooms the week commencing 9th June and make a donation to the charity.

Every penny of every pound raised will be used both for cancer research and to directly help those suffering from aggressive forms of cancer.  For more information visit the charity’s website at:  http://www.victoriaspromise.com.

Don’t forget to share your bake day pics on facebook.com/victoriaspromisecharity and @theVPcharity on twitter.

To make a donation:  Text VPSB01 £3 (or your chosen amount) to 70070 and why not get all your friends involved – tweet #VPbakeday

Notes to editors

Victoria Van Der Westhuizen, a make-up artist and part time model, was first affected by cancer as a nine year old child when her paternal grandmother was taken from her by the disease.  Three months later Victoria’s mother was struck with bowel cancer; fortunately her mother fought and won her battle.  Victoria’s father was then diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and died in January 2013, one month after Victoria’s wedding.  Victoria died in January 2014, a year after her father.

The Victoria’s Promise charity’s main focus is to fill the needs of young women facing cancer; needs that are not being met.  It is creating a number of initiatives; from specialist chemotherapy beauticians helping women that are losing their hair and confidence to no longer see a sick person in the mirror but themselves, to helping single mothers with childcare, allowing them precious respite to laugh, or cry, and giving them the strength they need to face a struggle unimaginable to most.

The family of Victoria saw first hand how just a simple 30 minute reflexology gave Victoria a chance to escape from her pains and fears, if only for a brief moment; these moments become invaluable, a commodity it is hard to put a price on.

It is with these types of initiatives, hand in hand with helping to fund cutting edge research into complex cancers, that Victoria’s Promise will be making a real difference, in the trenches of the war on cancer.

All the running and administration costs of the charity are funded by Victoria’s family, which means every penny they receive in donations can go towards cancer research and directly helping cancer victims.

This release was issued at no cost to the charity.
