CUT ENERGY BILLS BY 20% WITH A NEW BOILER
Replacing an old gas boiler with a new condensing model could trim an average energy bill by around 20% and that could represent an annual saving of at least £300 – timely advice on the benefits of a new boiler comes from the Heating Helpline.
13 November 2013 – The Big 6 utility companies are no doubt looking forward to the arrival of cold winter weather – with households forced into using more energy to keep the home warm they get the pay-off from the recent round of substantial price rises. But with the average dual fuel bill now over £1,400 everyone else will have more than one reason to dread the arrival of freezing wintry weather.
Heating Helpline, the free consumer advice service operated by B&ES, the Building & Engineering Services Association, points out that replacing an old gas boiler with a new condensing model could trim an average energy bill by around 20% and that could represent an annual saving of at least £300.
The majority of homes in the UK still have either ‘F’ or ‘G-rated’ boilers – at best these convert around 70% of the fuel they use into useful heat but it can be as low as 60% efficiency. By contrast the current generation of ultra efficient condensing ‘A-rated’ boilers convert over 90% of the fuel they use and are up to 40% more fuel efficient than the older boilers they replace.
And, as Roderick Pettigrew, Chief Executive of B&ES, points out, it’s not just money at stake: “Without doubt replacing an old boiler with a new one is one of the best energy saving measures you can take but it may also help to keep your family out of harm’s way from ‘the silent killer’ – around 40 people in the UK still needlessly die every year from preventable carbon monoxide poisoning, with thousands more made seriously ill, with the biggest culprit being older boilers.”
