28 November 2013 – Elliott Blakeley from Leeds has taken top honour and the gold medal at the final of the national 2013 SkillPIPE competition, held in mid-November as part of the Skills Show at the NEC Birmingham.  Elliott is undertaking his apprenticeship with the Leeds based office of national group TClarke in partnership with Leeds College of Building.  TClarke is a member of B&ES, the Building & Engineering Services Association.  B&ES actively encourages young apprentices to enter the competition.

Just to reach the finals Elliott had already taken part in eliminating rounds competing against dozens of other young apprentices.  The competition is organised by SummitSkills UK and was introduced to promote standards and skills across the pipe-fitting sector of the building services industry.

SkillPIPE is one of four related annual competitions – SkillELECTRIC, SkillFRIDGE, and SkillPLUMB – and gives colleges and individuals an opportunity to participate in a national initiative to find the industry’s best apprentices in the UK.  Competitors undertake a series of practical tests based on real-life work, which demonstrates their abilities and highlights their outstanding skills.

Elliott Blakeley and his fellow SkillPIPE finalists have now gained national recognition for their exceptional skills and achievements, at the same time enhancing the business reputation of their employers.

Not only that but all the finalists of the four competitions will now also have the opportunity to represent the UK at the WorldSkills competition; held since 1950, this internationally renowned event attracts over 900 competitors from 50 countries worldwide, with the next one scheduled to be held in 2015.
