RODERICK PETTIGREW APPOINTED B&ES CHIEF EXECUTIVE
12 July 2013 - Roderick Pettigrew has been appointed chief executive of B&ES – the Building & Engineering Services Association – with immediate effect.
Commenting on the appointment, B&ES president Bruce Bisset explained that, having served as deputy chief executive of the Association (formerly the HVCA) since 2008, Mr Pettigrew had an unrivalled understanding of the Association and a deep appreciation of the needs of its membership.
“Rod has worked closely over the past two years with the officer team in developing a vision and strategy for B&ES,” the president added.
“I am delighted therefore that he will be taking the leading role in its implementation.”
In his first day in his new post, Mr Pettigrew acknowledged that the Association, and the sector it serves, faced very significant challenges.
“The continuing recession, technological advances, radical changes in working practices and the imperatives of the low-carbon agenda mean that the industry must be prepared to adapt to the developing requirements of the marketplace,” Mr Pettigrew insisted.
“It is essential, therefore, that B&ES members are able to rely on us for the expert advice, guidance and practical support they will require in the challenging days ahead.
“I am determined that they will not be disappointed,” he concluded.
Roderick Pettigrew is a member of the council of the Confederation of British Industry and of the policy board of the United Kingdom Contractors’ Group, and is general secretary (UK) of GCI-UICP, the European umbrella body for the hvacr and plumbing industries.
A lawyer by background, he was educated at the University of Westminster and the Inns of Court Law School, and served as legal adviser to the Construction Plant Hire Association before joining B&ES in 1990.
Four years later, he was appointed head of the Commercial and Legal Department, a role which included providing legal advice to the Specialist Engineering Contractors’ Group, which represents the wider specialist contracting sector.
He played an active role in the development of the construction contracts provisions contained in Part II of the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996, and in the review of the legislation which resulted in the introduction, in 2010, of further protections of particular value to sub-contractors.
Mr Pettigrew is the author of Payment under Construction Contracts Legislation, a review of industry payment practices, and served for six years as a vice convener of the Cross Party Group for Construction in the Scottish Parliament.
