Signbox Limited, the UK’s leading provider of signage solutions for the built environment, say we are entering a new era of truly interactive signs and poster displays.

30 September 2013 – Research indicates that at least 285 million NFC-enabled mobile and consumer electronics devices will ship in 2013 and that number will increase to over 500 million in 2014.

Mark Bartlett, Managing Director of Signbox, who have pioneered the use of NFC technology in the UK, comments, “We are entering a new era where people will use their phones in a different way – using them to pay for goods and retrieve information will simply become second nature.

“One of the misconceptions about NFC is that it’s all about mobile payments, yet the focus of the NFC market is actually shifting from payment applications and it is forecast that by 2016 70% of NFC tag shipments will be used in marketing and promotional applications.

“This development has coined a new term – proximity marketing – with ‘smart’ signs and posters at the forefront of these opportunities.  Static signs, way finding and displays can now communicate via an NFC enabled smartphone, providing truly interactive experiences.

“Proximity marketing is designed to deliver instant marketing messages to audiences when and where they want to receive them and without the usual consumer engagement barriers:  with NFC there are no services to sign up to, no PINs or passwords to enter, no barcodes to scan – just tap & go.”

NFC chips embedded in ‘tags’ can be pre-programmed with a range of data or information that will transfer instantly to an NFC enabled smartphone with a simple fast “tap” of the sign, poster or sticker.  Upon engagement, a browser opens up with either a video, mapping, directions, product information, App download or whatever promotional offer a campaign manager may choose to deliver.

As a phone can read an NFC tag through glass or acrylic any business can stay ‘open’ 24-7 allowing consumers to download a restaurant menu or discount voucher, call a cab, book a table, retrieve details of a property and so on – any time of the day or night.

Bartlett concludes, “This is true communication with a twist.  It is entirely contactless technology and the only thing between your message and the people you want to read it is an NFC enabled smartphone.  Just tap, connect, receive and share information, offline and online – when a smartphone becomes an NFC reader the possibilities really are endless.”
