WELL MAINTAINED BOILERS SAVE MONEY – AND LIVES

Timely advice from the Heating Helpline on the importance of boiler maintenance.

27 October 2011 – 84% of energy consumption in the home goes on heating our homes and our water. And with energy prices now costing the average household a whopping £1200 per year, families will be worried about meeting these huge bills this winter, especially if we have another spell of prolonged sub-zero temperatures.

However, many homeowners do not realise that a well-maintained boiler will burn less fuel, so having your boiler checked and your heating system serviced will save money and energy; but that’s not the only incentive – it could avoid a terrible tragedy.

Blane Judd, Chief Executive of the HVCA, who run the consumer advice service the Heating Helpline, comments, “A well maintained boiler is more efficient, burning up to 10% less fuel than a poorly maintained one and with fuel prices at historically record levels the savings can be very significant.

“A qualified and reputable heating engineer will normally offer the homeowner an on-going maintenance contract to ensure the boiler is serviced every year to keep it working efficiently or carry out repairs if it goes wrong.

“But whilst every household will welcome the monetary savings from a regularly serviced heating system, safety is also of paramount importance. Lack of routine maintenance on gas appliances means that dozens of people still needlessly die every year from preventable gas-related carbon monoxide poisoning.

“So with winter approaching think not only about saving money but also your family’s safety – if your boiler has been infrequently serviced in the past, we strongly advise that you contact a Gas Safe registered engineer to inspect the system and undertake a service”.
