NKT has revealed the name of its third extrusion tower at the Swedish high-voltage power cable factory in Karlskrona. The tower, now called NKT Crown, rises 200 meters above the city, symbolising NKT’s substantial investments in the factory and the positive development of Karlskrona.

The new tower, NKT Crown, is a significant part of the ongoing expansion of NKT’s high-voltage cable factory in Karlskrona, Sweden, to meet the robust demand for high-voltage power cables. NKT Crown rises 200 meters into the sky, creating a new skyline in Karlskrona alongside NKT’s two other towers. The tower stands as a crown above the city of Karlskrona, representing a greener world, NKT’s investments, and future growth supporting the global transition to reliable and clean energy. NKT Crown also reflects the historical legacy of the city name of Karlskrona, which is directly translated to Karl’s crown referring to King Karl XI, the founder of Karlskrona in 1680.

- NKT Crown is an excellent name. The tower is built to meet the robust demand for high-voltage power cables driven by the transition to renewable energy. It now rises as a symbol, crowning the significant investments in the factory, the positive development of Karlskrona, and the energy transition. It has been inspiring to see the passion from people from near and far suggesting names for the tower, which is becoming a local monument of the ongoing development of the city, says Claes Westerlind, CEO of NKT.

The tower was official named by Ebba Busch, Sweden's Minister for Energy, Business and Industry, and Deputy Prime Minister, at a ceremony at the high-voltage factory in Karlskrona.

The tower and NKT’s expansion in Karlskrona are good examples of Sweden’s leading role in the net-zero industry. They have pioneered HVDC technology for decades, from the world's first HVDC cable to Gotland, to today's groundbreaking research and industry. The approval of the expansion in Karlskrona as the first EU net-zero strategic project confirms Sweden’s key role in driving the green transition and strengthening Europe's industrial competitiveness and energy security, says Ebba Busch.

The third extrusion tower is part of NKT’s ongoing investments of EUR 1.3 billion in expanding production and installation capabilities at the factory in Karlskrona. This will make the site the world's largest manufacturing facility for high-voltage offshore power cables when operational in 2027. In April 2025, it was publicly announced that the EU had recognised the expansion as the first European net-zero strategic project under the EU Net-Zero Industry Act, providing the project with national priority status for accelerated administrative treatment and faster permitting.

The name was selected by representatives from NKT and Emma Swahn Nilsson, Chair of the Municipal Executive Board in Karlskrona, from more than 600 suggestions.

Facts: NKT Crown

  • The name emphasises the culmination of NKT's substantial investments in the factory, leading position in the green transition, and the positive development of the city of Karlskrona.
  • NKT Crown is the second highest tower in the Nordics with its total height of 200 meters.
  • The tower will be used as part of the production process for power cables with voltage levels of up to 640 kV. A single pair of these can transmit enough electricity to supply three million households.
  • It is taller than many well-known European landmarks, including Big Ben in London (96 meters) and the Leaning Tower of Pisa (56 meters). The NKT Tower ranks 57th among Europe’s tallest structures.
  • The height of the tower is crucial for the cooling of cable insulation, as the cables need to hang vertically for proper cooling during production.
  • NKT Crown follows the factory’s two existing extrusion towers NKT Anchor (1999) and NKT Lighthouse (2022).
