The Nobel Assembly, which consists of 50 professors at Karolinska Institutet, selects the Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine upon the proposal of its Nobel Committee. The Nobel Prize has been awarded since 1901 to the scientists who have made the most important discoveries to the benefit of humankind.
