One of the city’s primary schools is hoping their pupils will become some of the fittest and healthiest in the land after joining a programme designed for engaging all children with physical education.

Oasis Academy Blakenhale Infant and Junior School enlisted sports and fitness coaching provider Fit4Schools to help the school’s pupils get into tip top shape.

“We are excited with this partnership, which shows how highly we regard each individual child’s fitness and welfare as part of their overall education with us,” said Clare Hoods-Truman, Executive Principal of the school.

“We believe children need to have high quality physical education and exercise as there are many studies showing how physical fitness has a huge impact on health and well-being, which has positive knock on effects for other aspects of their lives,” she added.

Mrs Hoods-Truman said the way the programme has been designed to help all pupils and not just the most athletic ones, was one of the main factors for joining.

“The programme is built so it is fully inclusive for all pupils, without them being compared to peers, and helps engage those who have previously shied away from such activities. The impact has resulted in pupils being motivated, agile and alert, ready to learn throughout the day.  The movement activities are used to reinforce the understanding of other subjects and support brain functioning.

“Skills in co-operation, language development, teamwork, resilience and perseverance have enhanced greatly throughout the change in our drive to improve fitness/PE.  Our pupils are learning to understand the importance of exercising for a lifetime – not just their bodies, but their minds too,” she added.

Mrs Hoods-Truman also added that promoting a positive culture of health in schools and the wider community is vitally important in current Britain.

“We are already reaping the benefits of this partnership and seeing our pupils embrace healthy living and exercise as a natural way of life, which they will carry into adulthood,” she said.
