Nordec builds Swedish rail bridge for single-lift installation over an active main line
Nordec has been awarded a contract to manufacture and install a 52-metre steel truss railway bridge on the Western Main Line in Sweden. The bridge will be lifted into its final position in a single operation using a 750-tonne crawler crane during a night-time rail closure. The project forms part of the double track upgrade between Hallsberg and Degerön, delivered by main contractor Infrakraft on behalf of the Swedish Transport Administration.

The upgrade is intended to increase rail capacity and reduce constraints on freight movements along a heavily used corridor. The corridor supports long-distance and international goods transport, connecting industrial regions with ports and cross-border rail networks.
"The project places high demands on both the steel structures and project management. Nordec brings the necessary steel expertise and project capability for this type of work, with the organisational capacity to manage complex execution under tight operational constraints," says Nijaz Mehmedovic, Project Manager at Infrakraft AB.
The all-steel structure will be assembled on site from sub-assemblies and loose components, then fully welded into a single unit prior to installation. The completed structure will then be lifted into its final position across the railway within the planned window. Executing a one-piece lift of a fully welded steel truss across an active main line requires detailed coordination of engineering, site planning and safety management.
Nordec's scope covers installation engineering, manufacturing, surface treatment, on-site assembly and the final lift into position. Production started in autumn 2025, with site assembly and installation activities planned through 2026 and overall project completion expected in 2027.
"This project combines on-site assembly, full welding into a single unit and installation during a limited rail closure. Our role is to ensure that these phases are planned and executed as one coordinated sequence under strict time and site constraints," says Aki Viiliäinen, Business Area Manager at Nordec.
