MeritaNordbanken Group and Unidanmark open in Lithuania MeritaNordbanken Group and Unidanmark open their first own branch in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. "A presence in Lithuania is important to Nordic Baltic Holding. We now cover all countries in the Nordic and Baltic Sea area ful- filling our Nordic and Baltic Sea vision," says Thomas Neckmar, head of Nordic Baltic Holding's operations in the Baltic States and Poland. "In tune with Lithuania's rapid economic development an increasing number of Nordic and international com- panies are doing business in the country and we aim to be there to serve them." Lithuania's candidature for membership in the European Union as well as its ambition to join the World Trade Organization are likely to increase investments in the country. MeritaNordbanken Group has had a presence in Lithuania since April 1999, when MeritaNordbanken Finance Lit Ltd was registered. In January this year it bought the operations of the French bank Société Genérale in Vilnius. Plans call for additional branch of- fices in major cities over the next few years.
