Nordic Mining's proposal for development plan with impact studies for the planned mining operation at Engebø was today submitted to the local authorities in Naustdal and Askvoll municipality.

The work with the development plan started in spring 2007 with the preparation of a plan program. The program was approved by the local authorities in Naustdal and Askvoll in October/November 2007. The proposed development plan is based on sub-studies and communication with the Sogn and Fjordane county's environmental department, and the municipalities and local communities in Naustdal and Askvoll.

The proposal for development plan is prepared by Asplan Viak. The objective is to ensure the mineral resources at Engebø for future production, and to develop framework for operation of processing plant, extraction of ore from the mine site, waste rock deposit, disposal of tailings in the Førde fjord, as well as infrastructure in connection with this.

NIVA has coordinated the work with impact studies which comprise 30 sub-studies. The following main topics have been investigated:

  •         Consequences for the environment on land
  •         Consequences for the environment in the Førde fjord
  •         Consequences for natural resources
  •         Consequences for society
  •
The proposed development plan will now be considered by the Naustdal and Askvoll authorities.

CEO Ivar S. Fossum in Nordic Mining comments: "Completion of the development plan with impact studies, and today's submitting to the local municipalities, is an important milestone in the process to establish rutile production at Engebø. Nordic Mining has used significant resources and the best available expertise to ensure sustainable utilization of the rutile deposit. Production of rutile at Engebø means the start of a new long-term industrial development in the Sunnfjord region, new jobs locally, and the basis for establishing related industry in the Sogn and Fjordane region."
