Strengthening ESG focus

Report this content

Nordic Mining strengthens its focus and efforts related to Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) and has appointed Mona Schanche as Vice President Resource and Sustainability. Focus will be on the Engebø rutile and garnet project to execute a comprehensive ESG program as outlined in the Definitive Feasibility Study (“DFS”). Schanche has been instrumental in developing the program and will work closely with the Engebø project team on the implementation.

The Engebø project will be developed in accordance with international standards for environment, health and safety. The aim is to develop the project with focus on:

  • Limited carbon footprint and land use due to tight project infrastructure, minimal internal transportation and accessible sea freight
  • Renewable hydroelectric power as the main source of energy
  • Mining operation with no acid drainage and non-toxic minerals
  • Monitoring, reduction and mitigation of environmental effects
  • An operation with more than 100 full-time employees
  • Substantial indirect benefits for regional supplier and services industries
  • Positive impacts on people’s livelihood, education and work opportunities
  • Stakeholder engagement to ensure good dialogue with neighbors, communities and other interest groups

“We will work systematically to build a strong environmental and social profile for the Engebø project”, says VP Resource and Sustainability Mona Schanche. “Our aim is to establish a cornerstone company with high integrity that the local community and region can be proud of.”

Nordic Mining aims to implement the “Towards Sustainable Mining” (“TSM”) program for the Group’s projects. TSM is a program for responsible mining developed by the Canadian Mining Association and employs a set of tools and indicators to drive environmental and social performance in mining companies. The program is currently being developed for Norwegian mining companies by the Norwegian Mining Association. Mrs. Schanche is leading the industry expert group that works with the implementation of TSM in Norway. Schanche has also been a member of the Norwegian Mining Association’s Tailings Deposition Committee for several years.
