Nordic Paper want to make bakers aware

We want to make bakers more aware. That is why we just launched a successful campaign targeting professional bakers. Bakers all over the globe care about the tools they use in their bakery, and about the ingredients they use in their products. But what they seldom know is the fact that the baking paper that´s being used every day might contain harmful fluorochemicals, so called PFAS. And that those chemicals may migrate to their delicious baked goods. That´s why Nordic Paper, in cooperation with the National Swedish Baking Team, launched this big campaign – since we want people to be more aware!

Nordic Paper produce Natural Greaseproof – where you can find a range of baking paper without any added fluorochemicals.

A successful campaign has recently been launched for Golden Natural Greaseproof – a baking paper without added fluorochemicals (PFAS). Baking paper has been or will be sent directly to around 100 bakeries in each of the four European countries, Germany, UK, Italy and France. The promotion consists of sending cartons of the top grade Silidor Golden Parchment plus an information flyer and a link to the campaign site https://golden.nordic-paper.com

Nordic Paper cooperate with The National Swedish Baking team since many years and the professional competing bakers are valuable when it comes to rating baking paper.

- Before we started to cooperate with Nordic Paper none of us in the Baking Team had a clue that there is paper out on the market that contains fluorochemicals and that the chemicals might migrate. Now that we know, we choose paper with the same care as when we choose our ingredients. You want the ingredients to be ecological and preferably locally produced and of course no one wants to use a baking paper that might contain dangerous chemicals, says Adam Söderström, coach for the Swedish National Baking Team.

The direct mailing was sent to bakers in Germany and the UK just before Christmas and will be launched to the bakers in France and Italy in connection to Valentines Day 14th of Feb.

The promotion is designed to encourage bakers to think of the material they use for baking and food preparation in the same way they think about the ingredients they use in their baked products. There is an underlying interest in the baking paper they use, just like the ingredients, but they have never really given it much thought, until now!

- It´s important that the baking paper we use is sustainable and has a low environmental impact. We need to think about the future and the next generations to come. That is something that is becoming more and more important, given the discourse that is on going about the climate. But also, as a professional baker, it´s important to have materials that make your job as easy as possible. You don´t want a baking paper that the baked goods get stuck on. You want a paper that is safe, clean and performs well, say Adam Söderström.

The response Nordic Paper is hoping to stimulate with the bakers is curiosity, to question what paper they use, to find out more about the paper they use and to demand from their supplier to have an environmentally friendly, sustainable, natural baking paper from a company like Nordic paper.

Facts about PFAS: There exist about 4,600 different types of PFAS and all these chemicals are persistent. It is well known that the so-called long chain PFAS are verified as perstistent, bioaccumulative and toxic. However, there are still many overlooked short chain PFAS and novel PFAS that could be considered as a threat because of their high persistence and mobility. This is indicated in the Zurich Statement from 2018 where more than 50 independent scientists completed an article in Environmental Health Perspectives.
