MELVILLE, NY, November 15, 2011 -- Chief of Anesthesiology, Pocono Medical Center and North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA) anesthesiologist, Anthony Nostro, MD, is being featured in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ Plastic Surgery Hyperguide with his article "Anesthesia For Reconstructive Surgery After Massive Weight Loss".

The epidemic of obesity within in the United States has remained a hot topic for years and has led to an increasing number of bariatric procedures performed, resulting in a direct relationship of an increase in reconstructive surgery. Due to the dramatic rise in patients’ weight and comorbidities, both anesthesiologists and surgeons are being faced with new challenges to overcome in order to ensure their patient’s safety.

“Many challenges present themselves in both bariatric and massive weight loss patients. The cardiorespiratory, renal, metabolic, and anatomical issues make these patients difficult to care for,” said Dr. Nostro.   “All patients undergoing bariatric and reconstructive surgery should be seen by an experienced anesthesiologist in a pre-operative clinic well before surgery. This will allow the anesthesiologist to assess the patient’s airway, vascular access issues, and comorbidities in order to avoid complications during surgery.”

Dr. Nostro addresses these concerns in his article as he takes an in-depth look into the key differentiators when operating on an obese patient as well as possible complications and preventative measures that should be taken during bariatric and reconstructive surgery. An integral component to both surgeries, as Nostro suggests, is the integral part that anesthetic considerations play.
