NAPA Leaders Examine Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) Progress at National ASA PSH Learning Collaborative Meeting
North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA), one of the largest single-specialty anesthesia and perioperative management companies in the United States, announced that Joni Brady, DNP, RN, CAPA, Director of Perioperative Innovation and Brent Lee, MD, MPH, Regional Director and Chief of Anesthesia, were featured panelists at the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) Learning Collaborative 2016 Fall Annual Meeting. The NAPA leaders participated in a breakout session focused on PSH 2.0 Advanced Cohort developmental work, which included the current status of each cohort’s PSH planning, implementation and optimization efforts. The event took place November 4-5, 2016 at the ASA headquarters in Schaumburg, IL
NAPA is a member of the Advanced Cohort for PSH 2.0 Learning Collaborative, which focuses on perioperative care quality improvement strategies that are compatible with alternative payment models such as the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement, Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement, the Medicare Shared Savings Program and Accountable Care Organizations. There are 59 organizations that comprise the PSH 2.0 Learning Collaborative; 40 in the Core Collaborative and 19 in the Advanced Cohort.
“Team-based, patient-centered care is central to the PSH model, which supports important health system goals for better population health, improved patient experience and lower health care costs,” said Dr. Brady. “As a member of the PSH Collaborative Advanced Cohort, NAPA is working with colleagues from across the country to advance perioperative care continuity through early patient engagement, clinical integration of evidence-based enhanced recovery treatment protocols and development of electronic health record (EHR) analytics to measure and report outcomes that support rapid cycle quality improvement interventions. NAPA’s involvement in this important work demonstrates a strong commitment to advancing perioperative medicine and the delivery of exceptional care for our patients.”
The breakout session titled, “Performance Improvement & IT Champions” took place on Saturday, November 4 at 12:30pm. Dr. Brady and Dr. Lee were joined by Dr. Karen Thomson, Children’s National Health System and Vera Whitehurst, American Anesthesiology. Specific topics that were addressed included:
- Aligning PSH Champions, team members and other key stakeholders
- PSH communication strategies
- PSH Performance Improvement projects
- Technology support and EHR vendor solutions
- Data collection
- Organizational challenges
Dr. Brady earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice in Nursing Administration from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. Her nursing experience includes clinical and leadership positions across all phases of perianesthesia care and pain management, with a focus on the translation of clinical research into practice. Dr. Brady authors a recurring column for the Journal of PeriAnesthesia Nursing, and currently serves as Chair for the International Collaboration of PeriAnaesthesia Nurses, Inc. Board of Directors.
Dr. Lee is a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology. He received his medical degree from Brown University School of Medicine in Providence, RI and completed his anesthesia residency at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC. Dr. Lee completed his fellowship in trauma anesthesia at the University of Maryland/Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, MD. He also received his Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health in Cambridge, MA. Dr. Lee served in the US Public Health Service as an Epidemic Intelligence Officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
