Demonstrates Implementation Strategy for Preoperative Anemia Clinic

North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA) announced today that NAPA’s Jason R. Guercio, MD, was recently published in the February 2016 issue of TRANSFUSION Journal, a publication written by members of American Association of Blood Bank (AABB). Dr. Guercio co-authored a featured article entitled, “How do we develop and implement a preoperative anemia clinic designed to improve perioperative outcomes and reduce cost?”.

With anemia as the most common hematological problem in the preoperative patient, there is associated risk with both increased perioperative morbidity after surgery and rates of blood transfusion. In order to effectively treat preoperative anemia, a patient must engage in advanced screening, diagnosis and initiation of therapy weeks before elective surgery. In the article, the Duke Perioperative Enhancement Team (POET) redesigns the existing clinical care process related to the anemic patient and describes a method for the rational development and implementation of a preoperative anemia clinic (PAC) using a systematic approach and strategy that can be easily adapted to serve the needs of other health care institutions.

"Care redesign efforts both within and beyond the perioperative setting that involve identification of processes most amenable to improvement, rational financial, strategic and operational planning, and resultant implementation of best practices provide a means to both lower costs as well as improve health outcomes,” said Dr. Guercio. “The PAC will help advance the ‘triple aim’ agenda in perioperative medicine by diagnosing and treating anemia prior to surgery, which will lead to reduced clinical risk and financial liability associated with anemia and subsequent perioperative blood transfusion.”

Jason R. Guercio, MD, is an attending anesthesiologist at NAPA. Prior to joining the organization, he served as an attending anesthesiologist and Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Guercio received his Doctor of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine, The University of Pennsylvania. He completed his anesthesiology residency at Duke University Hospital and fulfilled the Management and Leadership Pathway fellowship at Duke University Health System in Durham, NC. Dr. Guercio also obtained his Masters of Business Administration in Health Care Management from The Wharton School of Business, graduating with honors.

The other co-authors of the article include Nicole R. Guinn, Thomas J. Hopkins, Aime Grimsley, Dinesh J. Kurian, Maria I. Jimenez, Michael P Bolognesi, Rebecca Schroeder, Solomon Aronson.
