Melville, NY – August 11, 2015 – North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA) announced today that NAPA’s Senior Director of Quality Improvement, Julie Marhalik-Helms, RN, BSN was published in the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ (ASA) August 2015 edition. The editorial focus of the newsletter is ambulatory anesthesia.

Ms. Marhalik-Helms’s article entitled, "Providing Anesthesia Services Outside of the Hospital: How Compliant Are You?" focuses on state-to-state regulatory differences for anesthesiologists practicing outside the hospital setting. In her article, she explains that it is more than just regulations that vary from state-to-state – even vocabulary can vary. She points out that the definition of "office-based surgery" changes when you cross state lines and expands on the impact of these differences as they relate to any number of factors, including the size of the office to the length of the procedure.

“I am honored that my article was chosen by the ASA for inclusion in this month’s newsletter,” said Ms. Marhalik-Helms. “As anesthesia providers become more involved in expanding office-based and ambulatory surgery center care delivery systems, it’s essential to understand and comply with state regulations, statutes and guidelines applicable in these settings.”

According to the author, the article is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to regulation changes from state to state, but rather an eye-opening read for anesthesiologists who are looking to expand their practice’s geographic scope. It encourages them to spend more time researching these regulations to make sure their practice is compliant with current standards.

Ms. Marhalik-Helms is a registered nurse with 18 years of hospital experience. Prior to joining NAPA she owned a compliance consulting company for 11 years which specialized in non-hospital based accreditation.  In her current position, she manages NAPA’s quality program at the clinical sites throughout the ten states where NAPA provides anesthesia services.  This also includes the creation and implementation of quality initiatives that measure patient satisfaction.
