North American Partners in Anesthesia and Arrowsight Form Exclusive Partnership to Improve Patient Safety, Perioperative Efficiencies

North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA), the nation’s largest single specialty anesthesia and perioperative management company and Arrowsight, a provider of remote video auditing (RVA) services, announced their exclusive partnership, which is already having a dramatic impact on critical issues related to improved operating room (OR) protocols and infection control.

The partnership introduces RVA video monitoring services to the healthcare industry as a proven, viable solution for the challenges hospitals face regarding healthcare reform mandates, particularly those focused on OR utilization and patient safety. This unique, first-ever partnership couples NAPA’s clinical and operational capabilities within the OR suite and Arrowsight’s innovative technology to offer a revolutionary way to benefit hospitals, their staff and patients. The pairing positively impacts processes related to infection control, OR turnover time and throughput, surgeon satisfaction.

When using NAPA’s systems and processes in conjunction with RVA, hospitals have the ability to ensure standard practices are being followed, while at the same time strengthening patient safety via access to real-time feedback in their ORs. The service ensures surgical teams take a “timeout” prior to beginning a procedure, helping to prevent wrong-site surgeries. It also alerts hospital cleaning crews when a surgery is nearing completion and sends a notification when a room is ready for the next case. This in turn helps reduce the time it takes to prepare the OR for the next surgery and allows the following case to start on-time. In addition, the monitoring system confirms whether ORs have been cleaned thoroughly and properly, both in between cases and overnight, thereby reducing the risk of infections.

“At a time when healthcare reform plays a significant role in all that we do, it is important to engage the full spectrum of stakeholders to improve how safely and efficiently we deliver healthcare to our patients,” said John F. Di Capua, NAPA Chief Executive Officer and Interim Managing Partner. “Our innovative partnership with Arrowsight allows us to do just that. We can offer the sustainable tools that allow ORs to measure, track and analyze data, which ultimately enhances their overall performance, helps to optimize operating efficiencies, and most importantly, leads to improvements in patient safety.”

In March 2013, NAPA joined forces with Arrowsight to initiate a new pilot program for their partners, North Shore-LIJ’s North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in Manhasset, N.Y. and Forest Hills Hospital in Queens, N.Y. The program was the first time in the U.S. that remote video auditing was used in a surgical setting. NSUH set out to increase efforts surrounding hand-hygiene compliance while Forest Hills Hospital wanted to improve how their ORs were cleaned between procedures. Through monitoring, the collection of data and streaming scores, both facilities saw astounding results.

In a 2011 study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases Medical Journal (Using High-Technology to Enforce Low-Technology Safety Measures: The Use of Third-party Remote Video Auditing (RVA) and Real-time Feedback in Healthcare) NSUH demonstrated that the use of Arrowsight’s third-party RVA system rapidly improved and sustained hand-hygiene rates to nearly 90 percent in less than four weeks. Forest Hills saw similar results for overnight terminal cleaning as operating room teams achieved nearly perfect scores within just one week of receiving real-time performance feedback. In addition, Forest Hills’ near perfect scores for the sign-in, timeout and sign-out process has led OR throughput improvements to currently be an hour a day per room.

“This partnership with NAPA, the largest single service provider of anesthesiology services in the country, is truly a validator for Arrowsight’s Remote Video Auditing (RVA) technology within the healthcare industry. With our current healthcare environment, it is our hope that RVA technology will provide critical support for increasing patient safety and operational efficiency,” said Adam Aronson, Arrowsight’s fFounder and Chief Executive Officer.
