Simon, MD, Regional Director of NAPA, has been named President of the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists, Inc. (NYSSA).

Comprised of approximately 4000 anesthesiologists, the NYSSA is an organization of physicians and scientists dedicated to advancing the specialty of anesthesiology and providing the safest and highest quality patient care to the citizens of New York State. In addition, the society is responsible for hosting the second largest Anesthesia education meeting in the World, the PostGraduate Assembly (PGA).  Through the NYSSA’s election process, Dr. Simon was voted President-elect in December of 2011, and was recently inaugurated into his presidency role on December 16, 2012.  In his new role, Dr. Simon is charged with overseeing all aspects of the society in addition to continuing their national efforts as a partner of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA).  His presidency term succeeds another NAPA anesthesiologist, Salvatore G. Vitale, MD, Director, Cardiac Anesthesia at Westchester Medical Center.

"We are at an exciting time in health care,” said Michael B. Simon, MD, Regional Director of NAPA and President, the NYSSA.  “With health care evolving, changes will come about in the very near future that will shape the way we deliver and administer medicine for the next generation.  Anesthesiology, the field of peri-operative medicine, will prove to be instrumental in guiding this change for patients needing procedures both in and out of the traditional hospital setting.  As President of the NYSSA, I am proud to play an integral part in the anesthesiology community — working alongside the society in their efforts to provide input into this process, and furthering our stance on advocating safety and quality for the patients of New York."

As a board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Simon served various hospital leadership roles including Chairman, Department of Anesthesiology at UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pennsylvania and MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois. He is currently the Chief of Cardio-thoracic Anesthesiology at Vassar Brother s Medical Center located in Poughkeepsie, New York, a position in which he has held since 1998.
