North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA) announced today that Sonia Szlyk, M.D., Director of Regional Anesthesia for NAPA’s Mid-Atlantic Division, will be a featured speaker at the 2015 Becker’s Hospital Review 6thAnnual Meeting to be held May 7-9, 2015 at the Swissôtel in Chicago, Illinois. NAPA will also support the event as an exhibitor at booth #16.

Dr. Szlyk will be presenting to health care executives on the topic “Delighting Surgeons and Patients: Enhancing the Service Experience and Increasing Case Volume through Advances in Regional Anesthesia” during a breakout session on May 7 at 9:45 am. Her presentation will focus on how innovative regional anesthesia techniques yield strategic advantages for hospitals. Among these advantages include how ultrasound-guided nerve blocks positively impact surgeon satisfaction.

“Our regional anesthesia program at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital has provided a competitive advantage for the hospital,” said Dr. Szlyk. “Advances in regional anesthesia, such as ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, have enabled surgeons to perform increasingly complex orthopaedic procedures on an outpatient basis, as well as decrease length of stay for inpatient procedures. The success of our program attracted new surgeons who were looking to offer the most advanced perioperative pain management techniques to their patients.”

In addition, Dr. Szlyk will demonstrate how a comprehensive regional anesthesia service can improve a hospital’s Value Based Purchasing (VBP) Total Performance score, a key measure that affects the hospital’s financial bottom line.

“The 2016 VBP program, which links hospital payments from CMS to performance measures, will have an increased emphasis on patient outcomes and efficiency domains as well as continued focus on the patient experience (HCAHPS) and clinical process of care (SCIP measures),” stated Dr. Szlyk. “A robust regional anesthesia program improves pain scores, reduces narcotic requirements and associated morbidity, and decreases length of stay, all enabling more efficient spending per patient. These benefits will be reflected in a higher VBP performance score and resultant financial gain for the hospital.”

Key takeaways for attendees will include:

  • Enhanced patient, surgeon and staff satisfaction
  • Improved HCAHPS and Value-based Purchasing (VBP) scores
  • Increase reimbursements
  • Higher case volumes and improved throughput
  • Safer methodology of care
