Alliance Pipeline completes natural gas pipeline project in western North Dakota
Bismarck, North Dakota – October 29, 2013 – North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple joined Alliance Pipeline today for the company’s announcement that it has completed a new 80-mile natural gas pipeline in western North Dakota. The newly constructed and commissioned pipeline runs from an existing Hess Corporation gas processing facility near Tioga, North Dakota, and ties in to the existing Alliance mainline near Sherwood, North Dakota. Hess is the anchor shipper for the pipeline.
The 12-inch diameter pipeline provides the transportation infrastructure to move 126 million cubic feet of rich natural gas per day. Rich gas is natural gas that includes natural gas liquids (NGLs) such as ethane, propane, butane and pentane in the gas stream. Construction on the approximately $170 million pipeline began in October 2012.
Alliance Pipeline is a 2,300-mile integrated Canadian and U.S. natural gas transmission pipeline system, delivering natural gas from the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin and the Williston Basin to the Chicago market hub. The U.S. portion of the system consists of approximately 900 miles of mainline and related facilities. The system has been in commercial service since December 2000 and delivers, on average, about 1.6 billion standard cubic feet of natural gas daily.
The gas transported by the Tioga Lateral is produced in association with oil production throughout the Williston Basin; gas that might otherwise be flared or vented into the atmosphere when sufficient infrastructure is unavailable. The Tioga Lateral helps ensure this important source of clean-burning natural gas gets to markets where it is needed.
“This state-of-the-art pipeline will help us reduce flaring, add value to our natural resources and support our nation’s energy security”, said Governor Dalrymple. “We appreciate Alliance Pipeline’s continued investment in North Dakota’s energy industry and look forward to moving more of the state’s rich natural gas to market”.
“This is an exciting day for Alliance and North Dakota’s natural gas industry”, said Alliance Pipeline President and CEO Terrance Kutryk. “The Tioga Lateral meets an important customer’s need for rich gas transportation and offers other Williston Basin producers the same opportunity to safely and reliably move their gas and NGLs to premium downstream markets via the Chicago hub, including connectivity to the Aux Sable world-scale NGL fractionation facility”.
“The Hess Corporation is proud to be serving as the anchor shipper for Alliance’s new Tioga Lateral Pipeline”, said Steve McNally, General Manager of North Dakota for Hess. “It’s an excellent example of the work Hess is doing in the Williston Basin to bring natural gas to the marketplace for the benefit of consumers and businesses alike”.
