Northwell Recruits Liver Transplant Surgeon Lewis Teperman, MD
MANHASSET, NY – Northwell Health (formerly North Shore-LIJ Health System) today announced the recruitment of Lewis Teperman, MD, FACS, as vice chair of surgery at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) and director of organ transplantation at Northwell, where he is helping to lay the foundation for a new liver transplant program.
Dr. Teperman comes to NSUH from New York University (NYU) Langone Medical Center and the NYU School of Medicine, where he also served as a vice chair of surgery. He was the founder and director of the hospital’s Mary Lea Johnson Richards Organ Transplant Center in Manhattan.
“As we look to develop plans for a liver transplantation center, we sought to recruit the best – and we found him in Dr. Lewis Teperman,” said Gene Coppa, MD, senior vice president and executive director for surgical surgeries at Northwell Health, and chair of surgery at NSUH, Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center and the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. “As we prepare to file a formal request with the state to establish a liver transplant program, Dr. Teperman’s arrival at Northwell Health solidifies our program as a destination for advanced liver surgical procedures.”
Dr. Teperman earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester and graduated with honors from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. After his surgical residency, he completed a two-year fellowship in multi-organ transplant surgery under the legendary Thomas Starzl, MD, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Recognized internationally for his work in liver transplantation, Dr. Teperman is an expert in living donor liver transplantation, immunosuppression and organ preservation. He has worked extensively in the areas of post-transplant treatment and prevention of Hepatitis B and C.
Dr. Teperman helped develop the Model for End Stage Liver Disease (MELD) System used to prioritize patients waiting for a liver transplant. For nine years, he was a member of the United Network for Organ Sharing’s (UNOS) Liver/Intestine Transplantation Committee. He is currently serving on the UNOS’ Membership Professional Standards Committee, which develops standards and quality measures for transplants. He has served on the New York State Transplant Council since 2001, and is a board member and active participant in UNOS, where he currently serves as a two-term Region 9 counselor. He is a past board member of the American Liver Foundation, the Latino Organization for Liver Awareness and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.
As vice chair of surgery, Dr. Teperman will lead Northwell Health’s organ transplant programs, the NSUH Department of Surgery’s quality improvement programs, as well as the health system’s educational/academic programs for medical students, residents and fellows. His activities as a governor of the American College of Surgeons and member of the Transplant Advisory Council of the American Board of Surgery give Northwell Health a strong advocate at the highest level of American surgery.
