Diesel engines take to the rails for a scenic trip back to the 1970s
Awesome Seventies weekend on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, 26 – 28 June 2015
It may have been called ‘the decade that taste forgot’, but the unique style of the 1970s will provide a memorable and fun filled three day celebration of glam rock, exuberant fashions and some of the world’s best heritage diesel engines in the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s Awesome 70s weekend, from 26 – 28 June 2015.
The celebration of the 70s – the decade when the railway first opened as a heritage visitor attraction – is centred around live music and real ale at Levisham station, where tribute act The Glamned will perform each day between 12 noon and 4.30pm. The guitar and glitter-style music will be complemented by the vocal harmonies of Tamla Motown duo Afrodizzyac on Saturday and Sunday, playing disco floor-fillers and the hippest funk heard in the North Yorkshire Moors national park for four decades!
“The 70s was a remarkable time for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, so this weekend takes us right back to our early years for us, when platforms were what you wore on your feet,” comments marketing manager, Danielle Ramsey. “You feel like you are travelling back in time every time you step onto the platform at Levisham station, so we’re hoping that plenty of our passengers will don their finest flares and kaftans to bring this iconic era back to life!”
The fun at Levisham will be open to all holders of valid day tickets for the railway, with platform passes available at the station for £5.00 for anyone who is not travelling.
This year’s 1970s celebrations have been timed to coincide with the Heritage Diesel Gala, which attracts enthusiasts from every corner of the country and beyond. Guest locomotives will include BR Class 45 45060 Sherwood Forrester, BR Class 31 31271 Stratford TMD, BR Class 37 D6757 (Subject to completion of repairs), BR Class 47 47596 Aldeburgh, BR Class 20 20142 and BR Class 20 20189 those who prefer steam-powered travel, steam engines will operate between Whitby and Grosmont throughout the weekend, with classic car displays at Goathland station continuing the 70s vibe!
However, one aspect of the railway’s operations will be unaffected by the 1970s take-over – the Pullman Dining Train Moorlander! “The 1970s may have been an iconic decade for music and fashion, but the food was rather less inspiring, so we’d decided to remain with classic dining for those enjoying silver service on the Moorlander,” adds Danielle. “Enjoying a delicious three course meal with wine in a traditional dining carriage pulled by a heritage steam engine is a timeless experience!”
