Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 July 2013

The historic vehicles of the North Yorkshire Moors Railways normally require rails to get around, but on 13 & 14 July 2013, classic vehicles from the road will join steam powered locomotives for two days of nostalgia in the Classic Cars and Vehicles Weekend.

The event will take place at stations along the line from Pickering to Grosmont, with visitors invited to hop on and off the train.  At Pickering, heritage bus rides outside the station will give travellers a first taste of the vintage event, whilst at Levisham Station, live music will be performed between 12 noon and 4.00pm, with miniature tractions engines on display throughout the weekend.

“Our Classic Cars weekend really does feature the absolute best modes of transportation from the past – the steam and diesel engines running along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is the ideal way to park and ride between the assorted displays,” comments marketing manager, Danielle Ramsay.  “This event is always one of the most popular in our calendar, and as the vehicles are all parked on hard standing, it means that visitors can enjoy the displays whatever the weather, without having to wade through muddy fields to inspect the array of vehicles.”

Classic cars and motorbikes will be on show at Grosmont and Goathland stations – from vintage vehicles to more recent ‘classics’.  At Pickering, visitors will also have the chance to see a steam-powered car.  The recreation of a 1908 Stanley Model ‘M’ Steam Car will take pride of place at Pickering Station over the weekend.  When new, the Model ‘M’ was said to have been able to drive at 70 mph on a good road, achieving 10 miles per gallon on a 50/50 mixture of diesel and petrol.

Classic Cars & Vehicles runs on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 July from 10.00am to 5.00pm.  Visitors are advised to park and ride from either Pickering or Whitby, as there is limited parking available at Grosmont, Goathland and Levisham.

The event forms part of the NYMR 40thanniversary celebrations, marking 40 years since the line between Pickering and Grosmont re-opened for pleasure visits, having closed in 1965 as a result of national cuts to the railway network, highlighted in the 1963 Beeching Report.  It has since grown to be the most popular heritage railway in the world, hosting 350,000 visits per year.
